c) a guy disappeared
a character locked himself into the magazine and was no longer there when the Doctor and Nameless Captain went back in.
three people died in the first 3 minutes, totally negating any emotional investment that might have happened.

with Ten, when he was thinking out loud, you could feel him putting the pieces together. he was always one step ahead. if he were to say something like "disregard my previous theories," as Eleven did several times this episode, it would be because he'd been OH, SO DAFT before, he'd laugh about it in that manic triumphant way of his, and then be magnificent. even when he's wrong, he's right.
Eleven... every time he said it, it was an apology. he's always one step behind, and he's struggling to keep up, and even when he's right, he's wrong.
the Doctor should act, not be acted upon. and all Eleven's done since series 6 started is sit there while things move around him.

I will say that this was the first time I was disappointed in Matt's performance.
like. it's terrible, that you should have to carry an episode, or try and make decent material out of bad material

ahahaha, I would not be surprised if there were still cracks. Or maybe the Silent hiding in the magazine got him, but left the other three alone because they have a secret soft spot for blonde children and Amy's carrying their alien baby or something.

Yes, exactly. It doesn't matter when anyone dies anymore because it's not like any of them are going to stay dead. I hate it when Rory dies because he and Amy are definitely my favorite characters at the mo, but at this point it's like...I can only sit through so many more "HE'S NOT GONNA COME BACK EVERYONE'S GONNA CRY FOREVER oh no look he's fine lol" scenes. But yes, I did really love Eleven's sweet little worrying and anxiety, bless. (though as you mention, why couldn't he or the TARDIS do anything...?)

I think I might enjoy it more if I watch it a long time later with lower expectations. I've been looking forward to the pirates since like last year when the first promo pictures came out. :(
